The Woolaroo Story
Woolaroo isn't just any outerwear. It isn't just any wool. Most fleece on the market is made from synthetic petrochemicals (aka plastic), but we chose a better way. Our Woolaroo fleece is 100% recycled and milled in Tuscany, at Manteco, an Italian company owned by the Mantellassi family who have been perfecting circular wool since the 1940s. Each piece begins with pre-worn wool garments and factory scraps. Italian artisans carefully separate the fibers, sort them by hand according to color, and mechanically spin them into fresh yarns through their local Tuscan supply chain. No added dyes, no extra water, just naturally warm, exceptionally soft, and 100% recycled.

1) Sourcing & Collecting: Giving existing wool a second life.
Pre- and post-consumer wool garments (including secondhand knits and factory offcuts) are collected globally and brought to Prato, Italy.
2) How They’re Colored: Blended by hand. Zero dyes added.
Artisans manually sort garments by color and fiber composition. Then, through Manteco’s proprietary Recype® process, fibers of different shades are blended like paint pigments, achieving over 1,000 rich colors without any dyes or harmful chemicals.
3) Mechanical Recycling & Spinning: Old World craftsmanship meets low-impact innovation.
The sorted garments and scraps are mechanically shredded and frayed back into fibers, then spun into new recycled wool yarns, all through a low-impact process that preserves wool’s natural performance and gives existing materials new life.
4) Crafted Into Woolaroo: Creating 100% natural, 100% recycled, 100% chemical-free fleece.
The circular yarns are woven and finished into our signature ultra-soft, ultra-warm Woolaroo fleece, delivering -99.2% CO2 emissions, -93.3% energy usage, and -99.9% water consumption compared to virgin wool.
