Our Community Means The World To Us
This moment in our lives — personally, professionally, and politically — is unlike any other we’ve experienced before. Putting our lives on pause has given us time to reflect on what truly matters and how our decisions impact others. For us, it’s only reinforced our commitment to people and planet. And thanks to our incredible community, we’ll come out of this year even stronger!
In many ways, this time spent apart in our own homes has brought us all even closer together. We’ve become more considerate, more compassionate, and more unified by our shared fight to protect one another and this beautiful planet we call home. Together, we have limitless potential to create positive change and rewrite our future. It’s an exciting time to be alive!
Normally, when a new season is upon us, we celebrate with images from faraway destinations to inspire you to go further and find your Outerknown. But, this time around, we decided to do things differently to honor this unique time we’re all in. So, from our end of summer catalog (which hits any day now!) to the stories we tell digitally, our focus is on our community. Because community is everything in a time like this.
We wouldn’t be here without all of our friends here, who helped us shoot this campaign during quarantine from the comfort of their own homes and happy places. And we certainly wouldn’t be here without you! Thank you.
HOW HAVE YOU FOUND BALANCE THIS YEAR?
“Daily walks, hikes, or paddle boarding on Town Lake here in Austin. Nature gives us so much. I find it’s the best way for me to recenter and think... I try to take daily evening walks with the kids or get our hands dirty in our garden. We need our nature fix.” – Genevieve Padalecki, Sustainable Lifestyle Advocate
HOW HAS STAYING LOCAL BEEN FOR YOU?
“Covid made us slow down and appreciate the simple things... It’s just been a lot of slow quality time together as a family. There are no trips, no plans. This aspect has been quite wonderful.” – David Kitz, Photographer, Musician & Model
2020 HAS BEEN HEAVY. WHAT’S ON THE BRIGHT SIDE OF ALL THIS?
“As much as we would like a do-over, 2020 feels like what the world needed. So much has been brought to light, and we’re hopeful that real change can come.” – Kate Brien Kitz, Stylist
HOW HAVE YOU KEPT THINGS ON TRACK DURING QUARANTINE?
“When the quarantine stay at home order was enforced months ago, I immediately dove into my record boxes and started playing vinyl in my garage... My wife and I would spend two to three hours playing through funk, soul, dancehall, rock ‘n’ roll, blues, and jazz.” – Jack Luber, Designer, Builder, Surfer & Rare Record Spinner
IS THIS A CHANCE TO REWRITE OUR STORY?
“Unlike a great film, in life we can’t press rewind, we must go forward and learn and experience the pain and the joy along the way... I’m hoping for a more peaceful, healthier planet. For human beings to treat each other with more kindness.” – Lilly Hartley, Filmmaker
HOW DO YOU KEEP YOUR MIND, BODY, AND SOUL IN A GOOD PLACE?
“Been working at the gallery and brainstorming future plans and new ways to safely show art. Surfing as much as the swell provides. The beginning of the pandemic brought some incredible waves, which was a real saving grace. And meditating!” – Trip Patterson, Surfer & Gallerist
HOW WILL THIS MOMENT RESONATE GOING FORWARD?
“It has been a time of a lot of personal reflection and education. From education comes awareness, empathy, growth, and a deeper level of kindness to all.” – Quincy Davis, Surfer & Boutique Owner
WHAT DOES OUR NEXT CHAPTER LOOK LIKE?
“Change is happening right before our eyes, and it’s something we all need to support and stand up for. Someone put up this big hand-painted sign with a rainbow when you come into Montauk. It reads, ‘we’re all in this together,’ and those words have never been more meaningful and relevant. What do we have as a community without inclusion, love, and empathy?” – Mikey DeTemple, Surfer, Filmmaker & Photographer
