Celebrating the art of upcycling

By Outerknown Journey

Remember the iconic Bernie Sanders mitten photo? A cold-looking Bernie with arms crossed and hands covered in thick, cozy mittens. Well, what started as a comical meme that we shared on our Instagram page inspired our newest circularity initiative. And we have these Sweater Mittens to thank!

At the very core of Outerknown’s existence is to leave the smallest environmental impact possible. We aim to keep our products out of landfills, and whenever possible, turn otherwise discarded materials into new products with redesigned purpose. That’s how we met Lise-Anne Cooledge from Vermont. With her vintage sewing machines and the support of her community of fellow handcrafters, Lise-Anne has been giving new life to abandoned materials for many years in the form of mittens, tote bags, blankets and even dog beds!

Moved by Lise-Anne’s mindful creations and seizing an opportunity to further our mission towards total circularity, we took all our unused, recycled clothing scraps and immediately sought a collaboration. United in our mission to celebrate the art of upcycling while preventing waste by repurposing items, “Project Vermont” was born; a unique workshop that creates one-of-a-kind items with Outerknown scraps and materials.

Outerknown is excited to join this journey with Lise-Anne and her team, providing support and resources to take a collaborative vision beyond their immediate community in Saint Albans, Vermont. We all look forward to sharing more news as this relationship develops and can't wait for our first collaborative items to become available for sale this holiday season!
