Covering 15,000 miles and picking up close to 20 million pounds of trash, our IT’S NOT OK partners, Ocean Conservancy, just released the report on their 2016 annual International Coastal Cleanup with the support of half a million people, mainly volunteers. By the numbers alone it’s a staggering effort to clean up our beaches and ocean and it only gets more interesting when you dig into all the facts and figures. Take the 541 meters of plastic straws they found, which if stacked one on top of the other, equal 145 times the height of One World Trade Center in Manhattan. Or the amount of discarded balloons that when inflated could lift up a full-grown walrus. Enough fishing line was found to stretch all the way down to the Mariana Trench, 9 times over. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg. We recommend you check out the full report, linked below, where you’ll find stats like these along with inspiring stories from around the world. Can you guess the top piece of trash found across the world’s beaches?
